Gender smoking expectancies and readiness to quit among urban African American smokers An article from Addictive Behaviors

41J08AVSFVL. SL75 Gender smoking expectancies and readiness to quit among urban African American smokers An article from Addictive Behaviors

This digital document is a journal article from Addictive Behaviors, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The relationship between smoking expectancies and readiness to quit as well as gender differences in expectancies and readiness to quit was examined among 484 urban African American smokers. Univariate analyses revealed that higher positive expectancies were generally associated with less readiness to quit and higher negative expectancies were associated with greater readiness to quit. A multivariable model indicated that stimulation/state enhancement, taste/sensorimotor manipulation, and weight control were most strongly related to intention to quit. Although men and women did not differ on readiness to quit, women reported higher scores on the negative affect reduction subscale than did men.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Highly recommend!
I was one of those people who would quit smoking for a few months and then start back. A friend recommended “Quit & Stay Quit” so I purchased it. The day it arrived, I put it in the top of my closet where it sat for over a year. Once I decided I wanted to quit smoking, I retreived the book and began reading. I was so glad I had purchased the book. It was filled with so many great suggestions I used to stop smoking! I have been a succesful quitter for almost a year, and I know I’ll never go back. I have recommend this book to several friends and they too have been successful in their quit! Thanks Dr. Rustin for helping me see the best way to “Kick Nic’s Ash”!

5 Stars From an ex-smoker
I used this book to quit smoking and it really worked for me. I got me thinking about why I smoked and had a great program on how to quit. I’m always recommending the book to others.

2 Stars Confusing
I am a relapsed ex-smoker, but now have beginning health issues due to smoking, so I headed to my local bookstore for renewed motivation. I had read a great little book that spurred my initial quit two years ago, but couldn’t remember the name. That book wasn’t on the shelves, so I decided on “Quit & Stay Quit” based on the back cover info, primarily:

“Before you try to quit — before you even decide if quitting is for you — invest some time in ‘Quit & Stay Quit’.”

By page 44, I knew this was the not the book I needed. On page 7, there is a note:

“In a journal, (page 21) add a reason yourself — one of the reasons you want to keep smoking.”

There was no mention to begin a journal in the introductory pages, but no big deal. However, Page 21 gives no information whatsoever about a journal. It’s a totally different chapter entitled “Smoking Is An Addiction.”

Up to page 44, there were a couple sentences that stated “Now that you have quit (unless you are still smoking), …”, but the statement on page 44 ended my reading:

“Right now, you are a smoker who is not smoking. (If you are smoking while reading this, you must be highly [italicized] addicted.)”

HUH? What happened to: “Before you try to quit — before you even decide if quitting is for you …” There are still 230 pages to read!!

The author dedicates the book to a fellow doc that died from smoking, but it’s clear the author never smoked in his life. I know I’m only speaking from review of the first 44 pages, but he is simply reusing the same tips & tricks: write down why you want to smoke, write down why you want to quit, record each cigarette of the day, etc.

Nothing new here, in addition to confusing and a little deceptive. Save your money.

5 Stars 13 plus years and haven’t wanted a cigarette EVER!
I smoked 2 packs a day when I was using. I had tried all kinds of ways to quit. Then I found this little book. Read it on my lunch break.

It’s simple, so easy, you take your time, your own pace, learn as you read, change your mind and stop when you’re ready.

I actually quit 2 weeks before my scheduled cut-off date. I just didn’t want to smoke anymore. Never went back, never wanted to and there’s been plenty of stress since then. But I just dealt with it.

You can do it, if I could. Read a Book!

Stop Smoking Brain Sync audios

610FKKHF64L. SL75 Stop Smoking Brain Sync audios

No matter how many times you’ve tried to quit, you can do it now! And this time you’ll succeed. Precision-engineered brain wave frequencies induce a state of hyper-receptivity where subliminal messages get down to the very root of self-sabotage. Specially designed trigger phrases curb cravings, bolster resolve, and re-build a new sense of self that is healthy, vibrant and free from the grip of nicotine addiction.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars I’d rather have a guided meditation than subliminal
This has the brain sync stuff holding down the background along with a soothing keyboard line that catches your interest nicely, so it’s very “nice” to listen to. Supposedly there’s some subliminal stuff going on as well, but it’s completely subliminal: I can’t consciously hear anything other than the wafting binaural beat droning and the keyboard soloing. On its own merits as “some really neat keyboard with binaural beats in the background,” I would’ve rated it higher: it really is nice to listen to. (That guy plays a mean keyboard that is both soothing and technically interesting at the same time – very nice.) However I made the purchase for the “stop smoking” aspect, and I haven’t been that impressed thus far.

Overall, having heard this, I think a consciously guided meditation of some sort would probably work better for kicking the habit.

2 Stars Nice Music, but…
The music on the first track is nice, but there isn’t any talking. I couldn’t fall asleep to the cd either. I prefer Kelly Howell’s guided meditations so this one wasn’t for me, but if you don’t like the talking and just want the music a great cd. Didn’t make me want to smoke any less either.
